This happened a number of years ago at the Silver Legacy in Reno when I lived there.
Over a two day period I netted almost $4,000 using a system I developed on the fly. I had noticed on those LED history displays on live roulette games that you would see a number repeat after about 8 spins. I would bet the minimum until 8 different numbers in a row appeared. I would then bet on those 8 numbers. If I lost the first spin bet, I would then bet on the 9 numbers that appeared without a dup. If I lost those 9 bets, I would bet on the 10 numbers that had appeared without a dup, and so on. Keeping a history of my bets in a notebook, I knew how much I had lost at any point in the progression, and I would adjust the amount bet per number to recoup all my cumulative losses plus make a small profit. I soon found out that there was a cumulative limit per spin of $999. I also believe there was a max bet of $99 per number allowed.
Anyhow, I remember getting 13 W-9 forms. They were for hand pays of jackpots over $1200. I got a number of these close in time. A casino employee came over and said “we are watching you.”
I went home and wrote a Fortran program to see if I had discovered the goose that laid the golden egg. Using a RNG to generate roulette numbers and programming my system into the simulation, I came up with the exact theoretical house advantage. That’s how I knew I had done the programming correctly. And that I had just been lucky!
