Hello everyone,
I’ve just joined this site because I’m interested in making money from playing roulette.  I made quite a lot of money a few years ago with a sort of martingale system, which I adapted, which eventually stopped working, but I managed to stop while I was ahead and never lost the lot. I presume from what I have since read that I was just pretty lucky.  I have tried out various strategies, mostly taken from U tube, but none of them seem to be very good.  I even managed to get ripped off once but I won’t be letting that happen again….......hopefully!  However, I got mailed yesterday from someone asking me to buy a system and I can only presume that they got my address from this site.  I presume there are scammers on this site, but how do you distinguish between the good guys and the baddies?

Of all the forums on this site roulette and craps are the most active and in my experience have a higher signal-to-noise ratio than the others.  Of course we are all looking for the Holy Grail, that system/method/strategy that will defeat the house advantage, but there are also some meaningful discussions by knowledgeable (and yes, not so knowledgeable) posters with ideas on how to play the game for maximum enjoyment and profit potential.  Welcome aboard.

I presume there are scammers on this site, but how do you distinguish between the good guys and the baddies?

The mathematics behind all casino games including roulette (i.e. probability theory) as been around for a few hundred years and has yet to be refuted.  Consequently, to give the player a positive expectation a system/method/strategy must be able to win the bets it makes more frequently than the payoffs for those bets assume.  For example, bets on dozens and columns pay 2:1; therefore, IMHO a player must win more than one bet in three of those bets to have an advantage over the house.  Money management, and bet combinations and progressions can affect the frequency and magnitude of wins and losses, but so long as the spins are random and independent the player is expected to lose.

So how do I distinguish between the good guys and the baddies?  The best example of a scam that I can think of is at http://www.rouletteforum.com/viewthread/5684/, and for the reasons I give in that thread.  Other red flags IMHO include statements like, “My system wins x% of the time,” and, “It has yet to fail.”  Legitimate system sellers address how their technique derandomizes the spins.  Examples of these posters are VB Meister and roulettedealer.

And then there’s Project X.  I believe these folks are sincere in their belief that they have found the Holy Grail and so I would not call them scammers.  Nevertheless, all attempts to get them to separate their monetary results from their method for picking numbers to bet on failed, and my (admittedly cursory) analysis of their data showed those picks were not beating random.

Bottom line: if someone claims to have beaten the game, but will not explain by what magic this is accomplished, then IMHO it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and ya gots yourself a duck.

Thanks Midnight.  I’m sure that I’ll learn a lot from this site.  In fact I have already.  I’m quite enjoying trying out some of the systems and learning more about roulette and how to bet properly and manage my money correctly.  I realise now that when I won money before it was more a fluke than having a good strategy.

Good post moidnight…. Only one thing I have to correct. I am not a system seller. I have never asked nor received any money from anyone on this forum or anywhere else. I have had ‘students’ if you like but my advice has always been free. As you know I KNOW there is no blind system that can beat roulette. I only teach or advise about advantage techniques.

@ the newbie. You are correct, you were just lucky with the Marty. You got out when you were ahead, that means you have brains. See roulette as a longterm coin flipping where you have to win more than half of the flips just to be even….. In the longterm not possible.

red face I knew that; my bad.  I threw your handle out as someone who knows what he/she is talking about.  Instead of just “legitimate system sellers” I should have added “and posters of methods that actually have the potential to give the player the advantage”.  A thousand pardons, Affendi.

Either you can win with everything short term, or you use good money management and a good strategy to keep you in games longer. Focus on taking small wins in each session. There are casinos offering no zero roulette with no house edge which is great for us players. Good Luck!
